The History Of Photovoltaic Solar Panels
The first solar panels were not created until the 1950′s, but the first photoelectric cells were created long before then. In the early 1800′s, scientists began to notice that electricity could be generated using the sun and certain materials. The first true solar cell was created by Charles Fritts in 1883, and it offered less than 1% efficiency.
In 1904, Albert Einstein produced a paper outlining how photovoltaic electricity works. This paper earned him the Nobel prize the next year. Meanwhile, many other scientists went on experimenting with these cells, and produced several important breakthroughs. Cadmium selenide, a modern photovoltaic material, was discovered to be useful for this process in 1932 by scientists Audobert and Stora.
During the early 1950′s, Bell labs focused on producing photovoltaic cells for space missions. In 1954, they announced the production of the first modern cell, which had about a 6% efficiency. By the end of the decade, the technology was licensed for commercial use, and a 10% efficient cell was created.
President Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House in 1977, the same year that the Solar Energy Research Institution was established in Golden, Colorado. Growing interest in alternative methods of energy generation led to increased use of photovoltaics, and by 1983, more than 21.3 megawatts of electricity were being produced with solar panels.
The technology continued to grow in leaps and bounds during the later ’80′s and ’90′s. As technology improved, the invention of 20% efficient cells in 1985 was surpassed by 30% efficient cells in 1994. A 40% efficient cell was debuted in 2006, and a 40.8% efficient cell debuted in 2008 remains the highest independently collaborated efficiency cell created, for the moment.
The use of photovoltaics for electricity is growing every year, and as demand increases production, prices for the devices go down. Incentives from various countries and other government organizations allow people who would otherwise not be able to afford them, to purchase this new technology. Improvements will no doubt continue to occur, as cheaper and more efficient systems are sought after.

How To Make Embellished Roller Shades
Your windows are a hugely important part of your house, as they can be the only glimpse passers-by get of the home inside. Often people settle for shabby net curtains or dull metal blinds. But your home doesnt have to look dated and worn out like every other house on your street. With just a few materials that you can easily find on any major high street, your windows will become a much stronger and more inviting focal point of your property.
What You Need
- Plain roller shades, or an old roller and suitable fabric (measured to the size of your window)
- Trim and lace of your choice
- Shade pulls of your choice
- Nail gun
- Glue gun
1. Measure carefully to the middle of fabric, towards the bottom, and mark this point with a pen. This is where you are going to attach your shade pulls.
2. Once the shade pulls are attached, you can use your decorative trim or lace. It can be added wherever you wish, but looks particularly good either just above or below where the shade pull was attached. Measure it out and cut the correct amount. Then use the glue gun to stick it to the desired position. Be extra careful, as glue guns can get extremely hot.
3. Depending on the condition of the fabric you are using, it could also be recommendable to glue the bottom of your shade back on itself. This is certainly worth doing if it is loosely frayed or at all worn away. Carefully fold back around one or two inches, using a ruler to help you if necessary, and glue down. Make sure this is done so the glue is on the opposite side to the shade pull.
4. If you already have roller shades on your windows, simply remove the old fabric, leaving the rollers. Now you can attach the new material. If you have new rollers, you must attach the fixture to the window frame. This can be done with a nail gun or a drill such as a Makita LXT202.
5. All that is required now is to check your pull shades are working correctly by giving them a pull.
